Jack has been a member of both the American Topical Association and the Biology Unit since 1985. His main topical collecting interest is Lepidoptera and he has published a series of checklists for this topic on stamps since 1991. He also collects U.S. stamps and the U.S. military history topic, and entered his first exhibit at the National Topical Stamp Show in 2011, a display exhibit on the life of Alexander Hamilton.

He retired from the Army in 1990, after serving 20 years on active duty, more than half of that time overseas in places such as Vietnam, Germany, and the Middle East. Subsequently, he worked for a contractor supporting U.S. Army testing and evaluation at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. He retired from there in 2015, and now devotes his full time to philately.

He is currently the President of the Seattle Philatelic Exhibition (SEAPEX) one of the APS-approved World Series of Philately national exhibitions.
